Sheriff Daniel T. McEathron announces the Warren County Sheriff’s Office has registered with the Virginia Department of Health as a Safety Seat Check Station. This program allows parents/caregivers to have their car seats checked by certified technicians who will check for recalls. They will make sure the child safety seat and the child are secured properly in accordance with both vehicle and safety seat manufacturer guidelines, to ensure that is the proper size and fit for the child using it. The technicians will explain the findings to the parent and teach them how to properly use the child restraint. From October through December of 2009 Virginia Department of Health data that was collected from these Check Stations, indicate that the vast majority (85%) of child safety seats checked were installed incorrectly. This program is 100% federally funded by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles grant. This year the Warren County Sheriff’s Office received $400.00 in equipment. Tobey Anne Allen, Community Safety Seat Training Coordinator with the Virginia Department of Health Division of Injury and Violence Prevention presented the Sheriff’s Office with child safety seats and miscellaneous safety seat equipment.
